What is MyStar Extra?

  • MyStar Extra is the first blood glucose meter that provides an estimated A1c value, a key indicator for long-term blood glucose control, at any time. In addition, MyStar Extra provides further blood glucose information on fasting plasma glucose (FPG) trends, as well as a three day FPG average - an important parameter for insulin titration. The device is designed to support you in your insulin therapy management, allowing you to track your insulin therapy progress and better engage with your treatment plan.
  • MyStar Extra is a supportive meter with simple icons to clearly show progress and engage you in your insulin management to achieve better blood glucose control.

What is the HbA1c?

  • The HbA1c value is considered the gold standard marker for average glycaemia in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Glucose in the blood binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells, producing glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Higher blood glucose concentrations lead to a greater percentage of HbA1c. As red blood cells are replaced, the haemoglobin reservoir is also being constantly refreshed; therefore, measurement of the HbA1c percentage is a way of assessing your recent glycemic control and should generally be checked every three months.

What is estimated A1c?

  • The estimated A1c provided by the new MyStar Extra blood glucose meter is a real-time estimation of A1c from self-monitoring data. MyStar Extra is the first blood glucose meter that delivers robust estimates of A1c based on readings stored in the device – any day, any time.

Which values of estimated A1c are considered as normal?

  • The International Diabetes Federation recommends HbA1c values below 6.5% in most people with type 2 diabetes but individual targets are set in some groups, e.g. the elderly. For people with type 1 diabetes (especially children) targets are individualized and range between 7.0% - 7.5%, depending on circumstances. Lowering A1c to below or around 7.0% has been shown to reduce microvascular and neuropathic complications of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, the A1c goal for non-pregnant adults in general is lower than 7.0%.

Are the BGStar test strips also compatible with MyStar Extra?

  • Yes. All devices from the Sanofi Diabetes MyStar blood glucose meter portfolio, including MyStar Extra, use the BGStar test strips.
